3/6/2019: MSIB 002-19 – Parasailing navigation rules and flight safety

The Coast Guard and the Federal Aviation Administration regulate the vessels that may tow parasailers and flight activities, respectively. The Coast Guard regulates small passenger vessels and other vessels that conduct parasail operations. This does not include oversight of parasailing equipment, safety of passenger(s) aloft or interference with aircraft or banners being towed by aircraft. The FAA regulates parasail flight activities as well as aircraft and banners towed by aircraft. MSIB 002-19 addresses Navigation Rules relevant to the operations of the vessel pulling the parasail wing and provides information to promote safety while operating with passengers aloft in the vicinity of aircraft that may or may not be towing banners.


7/26/2018: First edition of NOAA’s ‘U.S. Coast Pilot’ containing Navigation Rules and 72 COLREGS now available

The first edition of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s U.S. Coast Pilot that includes both the amalgamated International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea and the Navigation Rules is now available. This newest edition covers the Atlantic Coast from Eastport, Maine to Cape Cod, Massachusetts.


3/6/2018: Navigation Rules to be included in U.S. Coast Pilot publication

The Coast Guard Office of Navigation Systems and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Office of Coast Survey announced that they will incorporate the amalgamated International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea and the Inland Navigation Rules into NOAA’s U.S. Coast Pilot publications.

The Coast Guard issued a safety alert about the sale and availability of unapproved recreational and commercial vessel navigation lights.


10/9/2014: Safety alert – Barge fleet lighting

The Coast Guard issued marine safety alert 11-14 to bring attention to serious incidents involving barges and the critical need for barge operators to display proper navigational lighting.


10/6/2014: The Coast Guard promulgates Navigation Rules and Regulations Handbook

The Coast Guard announces the new Navigation Rules and Regulations Handbook and explains printing requirements.


9/30/2014: Navigation and navigable waters- Technical, organizational and conforming amendments

The Coast Guard published a correcting ammendment to final rule on navigation and navigable waters.


7/31/2014: National Maritime Center to update Rules of the Road exam questions

The National Maritime Center updated Rules of the Road exam questions affected by the changes in the Inland Navigation Rules final rule and posted an updated bank of questions.


7/7/2014: Navigation and navigable waters; technical, organizational and conforming amendments

The Coast Guard published a final rule that makes non-substantive changes throughout Title 33 of the Code of Federal Regulations, navigation and navigable waters regulations.
