The Marine Safety Center recently updated two tools posted to its ballast water management system website to assist industry when completing the ballast water management system type approval process, or when accessing letters of intent.

11/21/2017: Preview of upcoming ballast water series from assistant commandant for prevention

As promised during the 4th Annual BWMTechnology North America Conference in September, Maritime Commons will launch a new ballast water series November 27 from the Assistant Commandant for Prevention Policy, Rear Adm. John Nadeau. In the series, Nadeau will provide greater insight into many of the leading topics discussed during the conference. 9/7/2017: Policy letter 17-05 – Guidelines for Voluntary Compliance with the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments, 2004

The policy letter provides guidance to Coast Guard marine inspectors, Authorized Classification Societies (ACS) that are authorized to issue international convention certificates on behalf of the Coast Guard in its capacity as the flag administration, and U.S. flagged vessel owners/operators concerning the requirements of the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments, 2004.


8/10/2017: Marine Safety Center issues Ballast Water Management System (BWMS) type approval certificate to Ecochlor, Inc.

The Coast Guard Marine Safety Center issued the fifth U.S. Coast Guard Ballast Water Management System Type Approval Certificate to Ecochlor, Inc. after a detailed review of the manufacturer’s type approval application determined the system met the requirements of 46 CFR 162.060.

7/5/2017: Acceptable U.S. Ballast Water Management Methods vs. BWM Convention Methods

The purpose of this bulletin is to remind masters, owners/operators, agents and persons-in-charge of vessels that the United States is not signatory to the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ship’s Ballast Water and Sediment (BWM Convention) and that vessels discharging ballast water (BW) into the waters of the U.S. must comply with the requirements of 33 CFR 151 Subparts C and D.


6/21/2017: Marine Safety Center issues updated ballast water management system type approval certificate

The updated certificate was issued to Sunrui Environmental Engineering Co Ltd., for their BalClor Ballast Water Management System in order to clarify the hazardous location installation requirements onboard foreign flag vessels.


6/9/2017: Marine Safety Center issues Ballast Water Management System (BWMS) type approval certificates to Sunrui Marine Environment Engineering Co., Ltd.

The Coast Guard Marine Safety Center issued the fourth U.S. Coast Guard Ballast Water Management System Type Approval Certificate to Sunrui Marine Environment Engineering Co., Ltd. after a detailed review of the manufactures type approval application determined the system met the requirements of 46 CFR 162.060.
